Bookworm’s Nook

an avid reader’s perspective

Hello & Welcome, Sherry!

Would you like to share a bit about yourself?

My name is Sherry Pringle, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to share a bit about myself with you, today.

I am a loving wife. I adore my husband! I think I’m probably one of those wives who talks about their husband way too much. We have been joyfully married for over 3 years and currently living in sunny Northern California.

I am a professional Relationship Coach. In essence, I help people get and keep joy, love, connection and understanding in their relationships.

I am a creative writer. I love to write poetry, songs, and short stories. I am currently working on a chilling horror novel and screenplay.

I am a firm believer that my life is a wonderful story that I get to co-write with my creator. Everyday a new page is written and I take full responsibility for making every chapter exciting and meaningful.

So, when did you fall in love with reading?

I have always loved great stories as far back as I can remember. My mother use to read to me at a very young age, so from there my love for reading grew. I remember reading Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham 100’s of times back then. It was my first love affair with a book.

Is there a book that you find yourself urging the people you come into contact with to read?

I think I am a big advocate for a lot of the books I’ve read. However, I would have to say the one I gush over the most has to be “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston. This book is one of the greatest treasures of my life. I feel like Zora wrote this book just for me.  Janie’s life spoke to me on so many different levels from the beginning to the very end of the book.  After reading this book I remember thinking to myself, I’m going to Florida to find my Tea Cake!  Well, shortly after finishing the book I did move to Florida, and on one sunny spring day in 2007, my Tea Cake found me.

What’s the best thing about paperback books? What is the best thing about e-books? Which one do you prefer?

I equally prefer both, just depends on my mood for that day.
The best thing about an e-book is that I tend to read more often because of the convenience of it being right on my computer or tablet, which I am already on way to much.

The best thing about a paperback book is the hunt. No matter how many times I tell myself, I’m just going into this bookstore to look that’s it, I end up leaving with a book! Once I feel and smell the bookstore air rush over me at the open door, the hunt for a new mystery is on!  For me there will always be something special and instantly gratifying about physically touching multiple books as I browse the bookstore.

What, in your opinion, makes a writer one of “the greats?”

For me a great writer is someone who can include the right amount of originality, creativity, depth, subtle humor and an element of surprise into a story. When characters come to a great writer they place them into the story in a way that doesn’t sacrifice any of those things.

What types of characters do you find yourself relating to more than others when reading?

I mostly relate to free-spirited women and orphans. I am always on the hunt for books with characters similar to two of my favorite fictional characters Little Orphan Annie and Lynn Searcy on the sitcom Girlfriends.

Are there books that you find yourself revisiting? (Either in your
mind or literally picking up the book to reread it again and again).

I have so many books on my “To Read” list that I haven’t stopped to reread any of the ones I would love to read again. I do find myself revisiting almost all of them in my mind at times.

Has a book ever brought you to tears? If so, what book and why?

Yes, “Beloved”. I would have to get myself together sometimes in order to make it through the next chapter. This book is full of emotion from the disgusting hate of Schoolteacher to Sethe’s gripping motherly love.  Just hearing the word, beloved, brings me back into this book.

Do you ever find yourself more connected with the darker

characters/antagonists in the books you read?

For sure! There’s nothing like unexpectedly getting caught up in the thrill of an evil villain.
Living vicariously through the life of a well written antagonist is one of the greatest joys of reading fiction.(hehe)

If you could introduce two characters from two different books you
have read, who would they be and why?

I would introduce Pecola Breedlove of Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye,” to Dickon Sowerby of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s, “The Secret Garden.” I would introduce the two in hopes that Dickon’s eccentric behavior and blue eyes would lead Pecola into The Secret Garden, where she would then begin this amazing personal and spiritual transformation, just as Colin and Mary did.

If given the opportunity to take your favorite book character to lunch, where would you go, who would the book character be, and why?

Isabelle Méliès from “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” by Brian Selznick. Isabelle is brave and adventurous, just the kind of friend I always wanted growing up. We would run through Paris sneaking in and out of movie theaters and chasing clues for our next big mystery.

What is one book you wish you could see on the big screen? What books,

in your opinion, were better as books, not so much movies?

I would love to see any book written by my favorite horror writer Brandon Massey on the big screen!

I can remember being a little disappointed with movies like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Old Yeller after having read such wonderful books. I don’t have that problem anymore because now I understand how both art forms work. I am able to appreciate both the book and the movie as its own version.

Think of your favorite book (or one of your favorites): What songs would you consider the perfect play list for this/these book(s)?

I love this question but it’s a tough one! Since I recently read your book, Just Beneath The Surface I, a play list for it is fresh on my mind. It would have to include Pearl by Katy Perry, Love Is Blind by Eve, How Come, How Long by Babyface featuring Stevie Wonder and My Joy by Leela James.

How do your favorite books affect your everyday life?

They encourage me to be courageous.  They remind me of how different life can be for everyone. They inspire me to continue to write and express myself creatively.

Has there ever been a moment where, you read a book, quote, or poem, and were so inspired, that you instantly started on your own project? (Writing/painting/any form of art …)

Yes! All the time! Other people’s art is what initially sparked my own creative expression through writing and it will always help to fuel my future creations.

I feel the same way. I love my nook but there is something about the smell and feel of a real book that sucks me in EVER time.

  3. I started reading books on my cell phone. I like books in e-book format lately, because I have been reading so much that I would end up with a huge library of books that I don’t have room in my house for. 🙂

    • Cell phone for me, too, Christy.

Thanks so much for stopping by!!

  4. I still love holding books in my hands. I especially like magazines the best on the way they feel. This was a great interview, with such compelling questions. Great job!

  5. I love your bio, reminds me of someone I know (yours truly). I have been inspired by everything I have read by you, books, blogs, etc. Keep doing your thang backwards because it works well for you 🙂

    • You are so kind and right on time as always. As I always say: Love your energy! Thanks so much.
